Support Groups
Carers support groups are run by carers for carers. They give you an opportunity to talk in an open way with other people like you, people who really do understand your difficulties. They are a great place for exchanging information and ideas, and sometimes there is an outside speaker to provide specialist input. Thanks to their informal atmosphere, it is easy to make new friends and members often support each other in an advocacy role. There are general carer support groups in many areas (Aldridge, Bloxwich, Goscote) and many more are planned. There are also a number of support groups for carers who care for dependants with a specific disability, situation or need. There are groups for parents with children at special schools, or attending the Shelfield Assessment Unit, and groups attached to various ATC's and Day Centres. There are also groups run by voluntary organisations (e.g. Parkinsons Disease Society, Osteoperosis Society Walsall, Alzheimers Society, etc.) Walsall Carers' Centre was founded by Walsall Carers' Council and acts as co-ordinating body for all these, and for carers who do not belong to any group.
